Derby Cathedral
Bess at Rest
The Bess of Hardwick story comes to an end in Derby Cathedral, where this indomitable lady was brought in solemn procession after her death in 1608.
She was buried in the crypt at the east end of the cathedral, with a suitably grand and imposing black and pink marble monument in the body of the church above, where she lies in effigy like a queen in state.
Among the other ‘must-see' treasures of Derby Cathedral is a beautiful cast-iron screen, a masterpiece of delicate artistry made in 1730 by local ironsmith Robert Bakewell. Twice a year, the cathedral's great 212-ft tower is opened for visitors to climb its 180 steps and admire a stunning view over the city.
